How Can Your Fear Help You To Overcome Procrastination?
Now so far, we have always been talking about fear as a bad thing. However, unknown to many, our fears can actually help us in overcoming procrastination!
Care to guess what type of fear can help you overcome procrastination?
Well, it is the fear of suffering the consequences of sub-par performance. Also the guilt of not able to finish your job on time can also plays a major part in your efforts of eliminating procrastination.
Obviously, that kind of fear can be a powerful source of motivation to aid you in performing at your peak.
And you may ask, “Does it really helps to just think about the consequences of procrastination?”
Well, to a certain extent it does help. Of course, just thinking about the consequences cannot possibly help you avoid doing the wrong things altogether. At least it can minimize them.
Of course, sometimes even after thinking about the consequences of not finishing an important job, it is still not sufficient to get you motivated.
If so, what should you do? Well, the next best course of action is probably to find a quiet place and start asking yourself why you are not getting motivated.
Keep asking yourself that question and don’t stop until you get to the root of the problem of your procrastination. Aim for your deep “Why” for your procrastination.
“Procrastination is like a credit card: It’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.”
~~ Christopher Parker ~~
Procrastinators and smokers are actually very alike. They like to put up a false front in front of others people claiming that they had always wanted to quit procrastination or smoking. However, deep inside them, they know they can’t give it up for some reasons.
Therefore, if you really wish to get rid of procrastination and get something out of life, you will have to find those reasons.
Now recall of a situation when you felt like procrastinating but didn’t. What happen in the end? What stops you from procrastinating? Is it because of your fears of having to face the music for your inactions?
What do you really fear that enables you to overcome your procrastination? What is the very worst thing that can happen due to your inactions? Are you fully prepared to accept the worst?
Are you allowing your short term comfort to overrule or are you willingly to forgo your short term comfort for your long term fulfillment? Which do you value more?
“Don’t waste your life in doubts and fears: spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour’s duties will be the best preparation for the hours and ages that follow it.”
~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~~
Face your fear and do it anyway. Just do it is probably my next best advice.
