You ever notice your dog laying around and scratching. Now it could be that he is trying to brush his own coat, or perhaps he just has an itch that needs scratching. Than again, he may be trying to fight off an invasion of blood sucking fleas. These miniature vampires don’t wait till dark to strike; they are the all day and all night type. To make matters worse, if you dog happens to gobble one down, the fights not over, this adversary continues the fight from the inside leading to a nasty case of the worms.

Now, if you’re not quite sure if it’s a flea invasion or not, there is a simple way to find out. Visit your nearest pet supply store and pick up a dog comb. Run it through your dog’s hair, all over, until you are satisfied that he is flea free. Now, if you happen to pull out some dirt, don’t just wash the comb and exclaim your dog needs a bath. Put that dirt on a paper towel and you just might be surprised to find out, it is a reddish color, a group of blood sucking fleas.

If you have found fleas, what do you do?

Depending on how bad the flea invasion is, and how far it has spread through your home, will play a great deal in your decision making process. You can always talk to your vet and give him all the information you have on the situation. He or she can advise you on what to do from that point. If you choose not to use your vet, than you must decide what kind of products that you want to use to combat these tiny blood suckers on your own.

If you decide to use the normal chemicals or sprays on the market, pay heed. Be careful how you use that stuff on your dog. You want to keep it away from his face and scrotum area. These are very sensitive areas for your dog. If he has an allergic reaction, that could be worse then the flea’s.

Some dog owners like to use natural products, such as garlic and menthol. You have to make that choice. There are also flea powders and tablets on the market. They may not kill those blood suckers, but there won’t be any new little blood suckers running around. The most important aspect to take into consideration is, by using the powder and tablets; you won’t be using the toxic chemicals found in sprays and shampoos. Do what you have to do to protect you, your family and your dog.
