Opt-in Lists - Taking A Different Approach
I have joined many opt-in lists in my time with the goal of receiving a newsletter or some other kind of information that would help me succeed. At first, everything seems great. I get my free reports or e-mail courses and I develop some promise in the marketer behind the list.
But that promise doesn’t last long as the very next e-mail is a product recommendation that “I just have to buy”, because it will “change my life”. Out of curiosity, I look at the product and I find that it isn’t for me. But soon after I get another e-mail about the exact same product, and another brand new product that “will only available for a limited time”. Yeah right, I have yet to find a product that marketers suddenly stop selling, unless of course they are extremely unprofitable. Eventually, that constant stream of product recommendations is too much to handle, and I am forced to unsubscribe. It makes me wonder if the marketer has actually “tested” all these products that he or she is promoting.
Then there are a small number of marketers out there who know that it isn’t good business to treat their list members as ATM machines. They actually follow up on their initial promise and continue to offer their useful information that isn’t going to cost them $49. This should be the way that all lists are run! List members should be treated with the utmost respect, just like a customer who walks in the local department store. If you continue in this direction, then you will start to build up credibility with everyone on you list. Just think what happens when you have a list whose members all look to with respect, and you finally find that product that you have used and are ready to recommend. In this case, you list are a lot more likely to buy that product through you. I guess it’s an issue of quantity over quality. Do you continually bash your list over the head with product recommendations hoping that someway will buy, or do you create a good business relationship with a list that you know is likely to buy the product you are recommending? I prefer the latter.
My goal is to create an even different version of the “list”. I look at it more like a free membership where my list members get more benefits than an average customer. They will have access to more “members only” free guides and reports, even after they initially sign up. They will also get a regular info-packed newsletter that will include major updates to the site. And best of all, I am in the process of setting a side a part of my website where list members will be able to post their own product recommendation complete with free links back to their website. That’s right, I will work on bringing in the traffic while they will get a chance to profit from it. It’s all about treating my list with respect and not like ATM machines. In the long run this will work out for all of us!
