No More Secrets: You have recently been notified that the IRS has filed a tax lien against you. This means you owe an outstanding debt of unpaid taxes and through all efforts you either have not or cannot pay. Your debt and failure to pay is now public knowledge.

How to Fix the Problem… Now is the time to put the wheels in motion to do some major repair work. Who is looking at this information? Creditors, banks, vendors, customers and anyone else who takes the time, can view this information. Without repair, it will become increasingly difficult to obtain credit, loans, and sell real estate.

Credit Score Crash! Once on public record, a tax lien can severely harm your credit scores. This is the gauge by which potential lenders evaluate your creditworthiness (your ability to repay the loan.) From my experience as an IRS-Hitman, if your credit score goes down, your opportunities for borrowing become increasingly limited. You will pay more for loans and financing. It will affect what you buy and when you can buy it. By taking steps to resolve the tax lien, you can improve your credit rating.

Take Back your Good Credit! Paying your tax debt is not a guarantee that your credit rating will improve. Make sure you follow up with the appropriate agencies to assure a raise in your credit score.

Pay What You Owe! Pay off your tax debt either in full or through a payment plan. Once paid, you need to take the necessary step to have the lien released.

Get Rid of the Lien: The release should be recorded at the same county clerk’s office/courthouse in which the original lien was filed. It is your responsibility to initiate having the lien removed. The IRS will not automatically release a paid in full lien.

Get a receipt! Request proof of payment so that the release is sent to the credit bureaus so it can be removed from your report. Getting your credit rating back on track is a crucial part of restoring your financial quality of life. Don’t let poor credit burden your current and future financial decisions.

Now you have the smoking gun…Use it!
