It’s very tempting to consider buying one of the refurbished GPS units you read about online and in advertisements. Although, I don’t think there’s anything specifically wrong with doing this, in today’s marketplace, it doesn’t really make sense. You’re not going to save enough money to count.

And since you’re not going to save a ton of money, why not get a brand, spanking new model, right off the assembly line?

I’ve kept up with the GPS marketplace for over two years now. It used to be that refurbished GPS units were a deal to consider for anyone who wanted to spend less money and get more GPS.

No longer.

Prices have dropped considerably over the past year to eighteen months. What used to sell for $400 now sells for $200! Heck, it wasn’t too long ago that the idea of getting a GPS unit for less than $200 was a pipe dream.

Now, there are some really great models that sell for only around $150. The Garmin nuvi 200, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, and the Magellan Maestro 3100 are great examples.

For a model that sells for around $400 normally, a refurbished unit of that same model is currently only going to sell for about $50 less.

Sure, I know you’ve seen on websites where some model, which sells for $699 when new, is being offered for $250 as a refurbished unit.

Well, I’ve got some bad news for you. That’s all smoke and mirrors.

Sure, $250 might be the going rate for the refurbished model, but it’s not currently selling new for $699! More like $300!

There are some unscrupulous websites out there that pretend their refurbished models are selling at huge discounts.

Well, yeah! If you’re using last year’s prices. But if you’re using this year’s prices, there’s usually only about that same $50 difference.

With all of that said, why even think about buying refurbished GPS units, when the new item is so competitively priced?

You do what you want, but personally, $50 is not enough of a savings for me to buy something used. Not at that price point.

Instead of thinking about refurbished GPS units, why don’t you consider these brand new GPS units, which by the way were recognized by Consumer Reports as the top models.

They are the…

  • Garmin nuvi 760
  • Garmin nuvi 660
  • Garmin nuvi 350
  • Tom Tom GO 920T
  • Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition
  • Magellan Maestro 4250

Although there are other great units made by these same three manufacturers, just these will give you a great selection. The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition runs about $150, and the nuvi 760, which can do almost everything possible for any GPS to do, runs just under $400!

With this selection here, you’ll have the whole spectrum of prices available from entry level to top of the line!

So, why buy refurbished GPS units, when you can buy something new for such great prices! Really! Get on an informative website and check out units and prices for yourself. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
