During the MWC 2008 conference held in Barcelona, the Sony Ericsson has announced 3 new classes for its products: camera-oriented mobile phones will now belong to the “C” class; “X” comes for the “ultimate user experience” and the “G” - the series of the phones that we are going to discuss here. The G-series are popularized as the easy-to-use mobile phones, for an average customer, but yet with sufficient organizer options. These are merchandised for the choice to draw some thing in the note and then send it to the other person - for instance the St. Valentine’s card to any of your beloved, or the reminder memos that one would generally put on his refrigerator. But overall, these devices must be accepted as the mobile phones intended for a normal user and the smart phone OS has been only integrated here, so as to control the touch-screen (SE already has some experience in this field) as well as to manage its extended organizer options.

Design:

There is nothing special that is impressive about the phone’s appearance - a slim, standard candy bar with the dimensions of 4.2×1.9×0.5 inch (106×49x13) and weighing approximately at 99g (3.5 oz), which reminds us the old M600 (without the QWERTY keyboard) to a great extent. In other words, the device is a pocket-friendly, clean phone, and is not ugly, but it can appear nicer if some kind of bling-bling was added (big golden dice, extraordinary colors, transparent materials etc.). The 2.4 inch TFT display fills the top half of its front face; the screen has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and supports approximately up to 262k colors. A video calling camera is made to position over it and functionality buttons are positioned below.

Situated here are the two couples of keys and the 5-way D-pad: shortcuts for messaging and are in the top row and clear and back keys are located below. The two shortcut keys hint about all the prominent features of the mobile phone (notes with the option for drawing…) but they are something that few won’t use often. Those 2 keys are where the soft and ordinary keys are located. As keys as such are missing in the model actually, it takes some time for getting used to the truth that one has to press the bottom portion of the touch screen. The numeric keypad also is old fashioned - 3 columns of the standard keys with enough space between them.

On the right side in the silver trim, are located the three keys: camera shutter, locking key and the volume rocker. The display/keyboard lock is one amongst the few things that remind us that this mobile phone is not like a regular candy bar, but rather it disposes of the touch screen. The slot for M2 Memory card and the charger connector are in the left, but for gaining access to the latter you have to remove the back lid completely. This appears quite strange, because in the lower-level of the G700, which almost has equal size, it is made to bring to its outside.

As always expected, the 5-mega pixel camera is present on the back. The camera has auto focus as it perfectly suits the hi-end model, but to our disappointment, it has got just the regular LED flash rather the photo flash or Xenon flash.
